Our History

Sportfriends has a long and distinguished tradition of soccer and friendship built on long standing relationships and a history which dates back to its 13 founding fathers in 1933.  Celebrating our 80th Anniversary, our roots go back to the German American Soccer League which was founded in 1923 in NY City and is now known as the Cosmopolitan Soccer League.

Our men's first team won championships in the 1940-41, 1946-47, 1981-82, 1983-84, and most notably a rare double championship in the 1991-92 league seasons. 91/92 is notable as both the 1st and Reserve team won their league championship of which we just celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2012. Many of those players still play on our current over 40 Team and Over 30 mens teams. Through the years the club teams have won several youth league and state cup titles as well as the NJ State Cup Mens titles in 1984 and 1987, many Cosmopolitan reserve team championship and O-30 Championships and another crowning achievement a recent O-40 NJ State Cup.

Sportfriends Soccer Club Completes Banner Year in 2012

The Sportfriends teams led a renaissance of the Club’s proud tradition by accomplishing some very impressive crowning achievements in 2012, most notably the Girls U18 2012 NJ State Cup winners the Sportfriends Orange Crush in May.  The team which competed in the Jersey Area Girls Soccer league (JAGS) was led by Coach Al Brunetti (former youth player and current O-40 player) whose team took full advantage of their 3rd appearance in 4 years in the State Cup Final by taking home the elusive crown.

Our U17 Girls the Prowl another JAGS team distinguished themselves as well by taking home the prestigious 2012 Baltimore Mania Tournament Championship in March.   Not to be out done Ray Thomas’ U15 high school boys took the Spring 2012 Northern Counties Soccer Association B flight title.

With that said the excitement continued this past fall with 7 youth teams and 3 adult teams competing.

Our U8, U9 and U10 Boys teams are really coming into their own with outstanding performances in the Northern Counties Soccer Association and a solid bond on the field.  Quite a few of the boys have dads and grandfathers who are club members and they are steadfast in upholding our proud tradition.  Though development of our young players is our main goal the dedicated training and efforts of our coaches has produced a pleasant benefit with all three teams sitting near the top of their respective groups with winning records.  The U8 boys finished the fall in 3rd (8W-2L) the U9 in 1st (9W-1L) and the U10 boys in 2nd (6W-0L-4T).  Thanks to all the coaches, Dave Bosefski, Dave Siljanovski, Rich Siljanovski for the U8’s, Jose Petrone and Fred Barnes for the U9’s and Claudio Zamarra, John Madalena and Jim Fett for the U10’s.

Not to be out done our 4 Girls team did great as well  A new U12 Girls JAGS team has been formed and adopted the name of our State Cup Champs, the Orange Crush hoping to carry on their success.  They recently tied for first in the Pequannock Fall Classic but placed 2nd due to tie breaker rules and completed their regular JAGS season undefeated with 5wins, no losses and 2 ties.

The U10, U11 and U14 girls trained hard and have solid teams as shown by their heart and determination on the field.  The U10’s showed improvement throughout the season and competed all fall.  The U10’s finished 2nd (5W-3L-2T) and the U14 girls won 9 in a row to finish 1st (9W-1L) in their respective Northern Counties Soccer Association flights.  Many thanks to the dedicated coaches and managers of these teams,  Ally Salvacion Gorski, Carl Rossi, Anne Garske (Mgr), U10’s, Alexis Chiani, Amanda Fabiano, Stan Lembryk, John Ellis (Mgr), Glenn Vanas (Mgr) U11’s, Eddie Smith, Joe Nigro and Jim Fett U12’s and Eric Rizzo, Patrick Villanueva, Dave Sikorski, Jim Fett U14’s.

The spring will bring the return of our high school players with the U18 Prowl Girls JAGS and the U16 Boys to complement our fall youth teams.  Our future is our youth, so if any of our members know of players interested in joining or forming a youth team please contact Carl Rossi at [email protected].

The men’s teams are also doing well with all three touting winning records in 2012.

Through the hard work of our board, players and volunteers the future looks bright.
